Madison-Oneida BOCES Earns Three Communication Awards

(Verona, NY – Oct. 2011) Madison-Oneida BOCES has earned three awards from the New York School Public Relations Association (NYSPRA) in the 2011 Communications Contest.

In the Community Newsletter category, BOCES earned an Award of Merit for its semesterly publication, The Banner, which is distributed to administrators, principals and school board members in each of the nine component school districts as well as to BOCES, media and governments statewide. It is also available online. The Banner is written and edited by Sapna Kollali, public information officer. It was one of three merit awards given in this category statewide.

In the Special Purpose Publication category, BOCES earned an Award of Merit for the 2010-11 Service Directory, an annual publication describing the wide range of programs and services offered through BOCES to participating school districts. The 2010-11 Service Directory was created by Jill Pekarski, public relations specialist. It is distributed to school districts and is available online. It was one of seven merit awards given in this category statewide.

In the Excellence in Writing category, the Rome City School District received an Award of Merit for an article published in the Winter 2011 district newsletter titled “Rome Grows ESL Program, Welcomes New Languages Into Schools.” The article was written by Sapna Kollali, public information officer for Madison-Oneida BOCES. The district newsletter is mailed to all residents in the district and posted on the district website. It was one of three merit awards given in this category statewide.

BOCES Board of Education Vice President Doug Gustin, of Canastota, and board member Sandy Lockwood, of Rome, will accept the awards on behalf of BOCES during the NYSPRA Awards Luncheon on Oct. 28. The luncheon is part of the annual New York State School Boards Association convention.
